The number of asylum seekers arriving from Sweden through the Tornio border rose slightly last week, sources at the reception centre and the police said.

Over the weekend, some 700 applicants were registered with the reception centre.

“In last week, there were several days when the number of entrants was between 250 and 300. The previous week saw figures between 100 and 200,” said Elina Katajamäki, the head of communications at the Lapland police.

The majority of refugees over the weekend came from Afghanistan.

The number of asylum applicants has increased due to the situation in Sweden.

“According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sweden has seen its own increase in the number of refugees. That affects the numbers arriving here,” Katajamäki said.

On Monday, about 200 people are estimated to arrive in Tornio.

Also on Monday, the municipality of Sipoo announced its intention to open a group home for underage refugees. About 20 children have come to Sipoo without a guardian.

The group home is scheduled to open sometime in November-December.
