The citizens’ initiative bill on withdrawal of Finland’s membership from the European Union will reach to parliament as the criterion of achieving 50,000 signatures in support of the pro-posal was fulfilled on Saturday.
 
The proposal for holding a referendum in the regard garnered about 53,000 signatures till 5.00pm on Saturday, the last day of the stipulated period for collecting signatures.
 
The initiative was drawn up by a Finnish member of European Parliament Paavo Väyrynen who is critical of Finland’s membership in the union.

Väyrynen, also a leader of ruling Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) in the initiative proposes that if Finland withdraws from the Union and a referendum is held then a national currency would be introduced alongside the Euro.
 
The parliament has an obligation to handle matters of citizens’ initiative which have accumulated at least 50,000 signatures in six months after launch of the initiative.
 
The citizens’ initiative is examined and approved by the Population Register Centre before forwarding it to the parliament.
