Organised by the politically non-aligned Joukkovoima popular movement, agitated people held a rally at 2.00pm at Senaatintori in Helsinki and brought out a procession from there.
According to the organisers, the government’s policies threaten people’s fundamental and human rights.
The police estimated that about 8,000 people attended the demonstration, creating a kilometre-long procession.
After speeches, the protesters marched from the square through the city centre to Hakaniemi area.
Demonstrations were also held in Tampere, Turku, Kuopio, Kotka and other towns.
Joukkovoima also organised a large protest in Helsinki last August.
