The Helsinki Court of Appeal on Wednesday dismissed all charges in a suspected terrorism financing case.

The Helsinki District Court had in the past sentenced three men and one woman to conditional imprisonment for the crime.

The Appellate Court said one of the accused was aware that funds he sent would support the work of the terrorism outfit al-Shabaab, which is currently fighting in Somalia. However, this did not mean that his intention was to support specifically terrorist actions.

The Appellate Court found credible the claims that the three others convicted by the district court had believed they were sending money to charities.

Cash were collected on a small scale from several different persons. The total amount was approximately 3,000 euros.

One of the men was judged by the district court of recruiting for terrorist offences and preparing for a crime of terrorist intent.

The matter is related to the man’s preparation to kidnap teenage relatives and send them to al-Shabaab’s training camp as well as to recruit his brother into the organisation. The Court of Appeals dismissed these convictions.

The Court of Appeal pointed out that the man had researched visa prices and flight tickets but did not actually acquire them for his nephew.

According to the Court of Appeal, the man might have joined al-Shabaab for reasons other than conversations with the defendant.
