Jan Vapaavuori, vice president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and a long-term Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) politician, on Saturday said he is not interested in becoming the mayor of Helsinki.

Vapaavuori shared his mind during an interview with the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast programme).

Vapaavuori said he would like to continue with his job at the EIB.

The former economic affairs minister of the country, however, gave the impression that the mayor’s job might interest him later.

Vapaavuori is a native of Helsinki.

Helsinki will have a mayor starting in June 2017. The mayor will also act as the chair of the city board. The city council will be tasked with electing the mayor and the deputy mayor.

Earlier this week, Vapaavuori said he will not be in the race to challenge Finance Minister Alexander Stubb for the seat of Kokoomus chair.
