The police on Saturday night shot an armed man to death in Petäjävesi, Central Finland.

The police were informed on Saturday afternoon about a man who was driving a car and threatening to harm himself.

The man was found seated in his car at a forest crossroad. The police succeeded in preventing the man from driving away and began to negotiate with him.

The man threatened the police with a firearm. The situation escalated further forcing the police to use firearm.

The man was declared dead despite efforts to revive him.

According to the Finnish language daily Keskisuomalainen, the man possessed an illegal firearm.

The police have largely remained tight-lipped regarding the details of the incident. The age of the man, for example, and where he hailed from have not been revealed.

The Office of the Prosecutor General is investigating the case.

Incidents which result in death from police shootings are rare in the country. However, about a month ago the police shot to death a stabbing suspect in Tuusula.

According to the National Police Board, the Petäjävesi incident is the sixth case in 2000s when a police bullet has resulted in death.
