The Nato-led Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) training will extend for the first time onto the Finnish mainland.

The multinational group will practice landing at the Hanko Syndalen training area in June. About 160 Finnish Coastal Jaegers will work with the United States and Swedish troops, among others.

“The cooperative practice will take place in Hanko from June 6 to 8. Immediately afterward, proper operational amphibious training will be held in Utö, Sweden,” said Uusimaa Brigade commander Kjell Törner.

The exercise will focus on the Coastal Jaegers lowering their landing boats from the mother-ship. They will not be moving, for example, toward any beach.

Companies of Finnish and Swedish troops, as well as smaller divisions of German and Italian troops, will be aboard the Dutch mothership. The US Marine Corp company will again propel the amphibious vehicle under its own power.

Finnish minelayer Uusimaa, aboard which serve about a hundred troops, will also participate. Törner says that their practice will focus on preparing for crisis management.

Finland and Sweden only take part in practicing landings in the BALTOPS training, with about 600 soldiers participating. About 4,500 troops altogether will participate in the BALTOPS training, and it will continue with landing training farther south in the Baltic.

BALTOPS has been arranged since 1971, and Finland has been involved since the early 1990s.

Swedish and Finnish naval forces have in recent years strengthened their cooperation, and that development is ongoing.
