The police on Tuesday detained about 40 activists from the site of the Fennovoima nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki.
The activists had breached a fence that morning and trespassed into the property. The police took the activists to the Raahe police station.
According to the police, the activists damaged one police car and stoned a civilian vehicle. By noon, no was reported injured in the incident.
According to the activists, the police used pepper spray at a reporter from the national news broadcaster Yle.
The reporter, Hanna Hantula confirmed the incident via Twitter, but said she was not affected by the pepper spray, and the mood on the ground was calm by midday.
“Apparently the activists were pepper-sprayed from a distance. I got some of it, too, because my cheeks and lips sting,” Hantula said on Yle website.
Hantula also said on Twitter that the camp is guarded by anarchists who had threatened to break another reporter’s camera.
According to the police, the vast majority of activists will spend the night in police custody.
“I would estimate that the majority will be released only on Wednesday,” Raahe police superintendent Veijo Alavaikka told the Finnish news agency STT.
Alavaikko also believes that more damaging deeds will be uncovered, when the investigation proceeds.
“Right now the situation is calm. There are still some activists camped on site, but were not interested in peaceful activists, and we didn’t bring any of them here,” Alavaikko said.
Protesters said in the morning that they had stopped all work at the site, but the police refuted this claim saying the activists only caused minor disturbances.
