The government on Friday survived a no-confidence motion brought by the main opposition par-ty Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) with 103 votes to 69 in the Parliament.

A total of 27 lawmakers were absent during the voting.

Among those who were absent included Savonlinna MP's Hanna Kosonen and Kaj Turunen.

The reason for their absence, according to local newspapers was because of the closure of the teacher training school which is part of University of Eastern Finland.

“The battle on behalf of the OKL (teacher training school) which has lasted the whole of this month has been very strenuous both physically and mentally.

“This morning I had fallen ill from being vexed, and I am not able to go the parliament to affirm my confidence to the government in the afternoon voting,” Turunen told the West Savonia and East Savonia newspapers.

The SDP interpellation was concerned with the direction the country is taking.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä during the interpellation debate said the government does not have means to prevent the closure of Savonlinna teacher training school.
