There is a lack of clarity about use of Air Force planes by ministers for official trips, reported the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the newspaper report, the Ministry of Defence has been given very diverse reasons for the use of military aircraft by government ministers.

The Helsingin Sanomat investigated into the government flights from 2011 to 2015 which were not normally scheduled.

Official requests were found for only a quarter of those flights. The requests cited the reasons for the transportation. The majority of the transportation requests are either missing or were not recorded.

Half of all the ministerial military flights made in 2011 to 2015 were made by Defence Minister Carl Haglund and current Finance Minister Alexander Stubb.

According to information from the defence ministry, during this period, the Air Force used its own planes for ministerial flights 126 times.

The Helsingin Sanomat said the Defence Forces charge the ministers only a fraction of the real costs of the transport.
