FTimes – STT Report, May 31

Several non-government organisations have called on parliament to reject a bill that would restrict family reunification. The organisations fear that thousands of children could be stranded in Finland without a family, if the bill is passed.

The government is planning an income requirement as a condition for family members of those granted asylum in Finland. The draft law will be submitted for consideration this week to the parliamentary administration committee.

The organisations are demanding that Finland ensure children the right to a family life, as agreed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The bill has been criticised by the Finnish Refugee Council, Save the Children, the Child Welfare Central Association, he Mannerheim League for Child Welfare, the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters, Plan Suomi, Finnish UNICEF, the Population Association, Amnesty International Finland, the Refugee Advice Centre, and the Finnish Church Aid.
