This comes after Soini, the chairman of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), repeated his old saying “Where there is the EU, there is a problem” after the Brexit vote in Britain.
“This is exactly the kind of talk we need to avoid,” Sipilä said in Brussels after the EU summit.
According to Sipilä, the EU leaders acknowledged that member countries blame their internal problems too easily on the EU.
He believes the EU’s basic premise should be brightening the lives of their citizens.
“I believe that Merkel [German chancellor Angela] noted during the debate, quoting predecessors, that those who have forgotten the EU project should visit the graves of soldiers as a reminder,” said Sipilä.
The PM was careful not to criticise Soini for his public opinion on the potential for an EU referendum.
He said there has not been time yet to discuss the matter with Soini.
“I have received a text message from Soini, and he said the discussion is not going the way the press has described it. He is fully committed to the government programme and stands behind it. This government will not bring a [referendum],” said the prime minister.
