The show turns the spotlight on the latest emerging trends, such as Ultra HD TV (or 4K TV), 3D printing and wearable devices.

"Welcome to the 2014 International CES, the world's gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. Over the next four days, you will experience the world's largest hands-on showcase of emerging innovation," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

"CES represents all aspects of the tech ecosystem, and reflects and drives the magic, wonder, energy and promise on innovation," he said.

In 2013, an estimated 60,000 TVs with Ultra HD resolution were sold around the world. The CEA expects the figure to surge to 500,000 this year and 3 million in 2017, from companies like TCL, Samsung, Sony and others.

One of the biggest focus points this year is 3D printing. A new 3D printing TechZone will showcase the latest advances in 3D printing technology from the world's top companies in the category.

"Exhibitor demand really drove our decision to formalize this 3D Printing TechZone, as it's quickly becoming one of the more dynamic and innovative categories within our industry, while also becoming more accessible to consumers from a price perspective," CEA senior vice president for events and conferences Karen Chupka said.

Several companies are expected to unveil wearable devices that are easier to use, extend battery life, and tap into the power of gestures, social networks and cloud computing.

The wearables wave is still in its early phases. Many of the technologies on display will offer a glimpse of the future.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said during his pre-show keynote speech, "Wearables are not everywhere today because they aren't yet solving real problems and they aren't yet integrated with our lifestyles."

Intel is actively pursuing a range of products and initiatives, with the goal of accelerating wearable device innovation.

The consumer technology industry fuels economic growth on a global scale. Worldwide sales of consumer electronics devices are estimated to top 1.05 trillion U.S. dollars in 2014, according to CEA.

The CES features more than 3,200 manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems this year. More than 152,000 participants from more than 150 countries are expected to attend.
