FTimes-STT Report, July 10

The diesel engine-maker Agco Power has terminated 52 workers. All the axed employees excepting one were production workers.

About 200 workers on Wednesday marched out in protest against the terminations during the morning shift, said chief shop steward Mika Ovaskainen.

One hundred and fifty employees also did not turn up for the evening shift, while no information was still available on the situation likely to be faced during the night shift.

The CEO of the company, Eero Tomi, said market situation and reduced orders were the reasons behind the redundancies, adding that there was no need for holding new co-determination negotiations.

The company’s engine plant in Linnavuori was expanded last year at a cost of 25 million euros. The investment was much welcomed and created new jobs.

The previous statutory negotiations resulted in lay-offs which are still continuing.

The company has nearly 900 employees at its Nokia and Tesoma plants in Tampere.
