President Sauli Niinistö, now in Kazakhstan on a three-day visit since Tuesday, during a one-to-one discussion with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana on Wednesday drew Nazarbayev’s attention to the human rights situation in his country.
 
The two heads of state also discussed a range of other issues, including bilateral trade and international affairs.
 
Industries Minister Jan Vapaavuori, who is accompanying the president along with a business team, has been exploring the possibilities of boosting bilateral trade.
 
Finnish company Patria Pilot Training and the Kazakh Academy of Civil Aviation on the day signed a letter of intent on co-operation in training professional pilots. 
First Lady Jenni Haukio, who also accompanied her husband to Kazakhstan, visited a school, a cultural centre, and a health research institute on Wednesday.  
 
On human rights situation in Kazakhstan, President Niinistö said if any country found something wrong in its activities and tried to improve the situation, it should be appreciated.
 
Kazakhstan’s human rights record is very poor and there has been no significant improvement in the regard in recent years. European Parliament, too, has called for improving the human rights situation of the country.
 
Kazakhstan newspaper BNews.kz reports: Kazakhstan and Finland have a lot in common, Finland President Sauli Niinistö said during a bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
 
‘It is a great pleasure for me to meet with you in the initial stage of my stay on this post here, in Astana. 
 
As you correctly told, our countries have a lot in common, joint and, including, history, historical events,’ said the Finland president.
 
The BNews.kz in another report says: Kazakhstan’s economy is growing at a rapid pace, Niinistö told a press conference after the meeting with Nazarbayev.
