Viktor meets Katainen, Niinistö in Helsinki
FTimes-STT Report, May 14

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban on Monday defended the recent constitutional changes in his country terming the observations of different countries and organisations, including European as untrue.

The Hungarian premier made the remarks at a joint press conference after holding talks with his Finland counterpart Jyrki Katainen and President Sauli Niinistö during his visit to Helsinki.

The amendments in the constitution decided by the Hungarian Constitutional Court in November 2012 annulled previous legislation that criminalized habitual living in public spaces, which deemed the Fundamental Law requirements for legal certainty and the protection of the right to human dignity and the right to property.

The International observers said that the changes would worsen the democracy by weakening the position of students, homeless, Roma and sexual minorities.

‘It is simply misunderstanding that is why the EU termed the constitutional changes as undemocratic action,’ said the visiting Prime Minister.

The Finland Prime Minister replying to a query told the press conference that the policies and constitutional state of a country ensuring rule of law and human rights is important but the main policy of Finland is no country should be ruled out from the decision making role of EU.

Earlier, Finland, Germany, Denmark and Holland have taken an initiative to handle the situation of any member state, if democratic process is hampered there.

One of the ways of handling the situation could be stopping the EU funding to the suspected country.

The Finland Premier on Monday, however, said that the initiative was not taken for Hungary directly.

The prime ministers of both the countries during their discussion also focused the economic situation in the EU, development of the EU's single market, and questions relating to the common security and defence policy.
