The minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alexander Stubb has entered the race to succeed Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen as the next leader of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party).

His decision is born of heart, Stubb told a press conference in Espoo on Tuesday. “When the fatherland comes calling, you heed,” said the minister.

He said he would like to lead by example and listen to the people.

He also hopes that his party will chose a chairman alongside whom it will win the next parliamentary elections in 2015.

Stubb has been one of the favourites in opinion polls. In a recent MTV survey, Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori emerged as the most popular candidate to lead the party.

Stubb, however, does not believe that there will be much difference in policy between him and Vapaavuori during the campaign and said cooperation between them would continue.

Earlier, Vapaavuori announced his aspiration to become the next chairperson of the Kokoomus.

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on April 5 announced his decision to step down as the National Coalition Party chairman as well as the prime minister.

The party will elect its new chairperson in June at a convention in Lahti.
