Former Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) Chairperson and Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen has announced that she will give up her ministerial docket following the leadership change in the SDP.

The SDP on Friday elected Antti Rinne as its new leader at a convention in Seinäjoki.

Urpilainen said she will remain as an MP once the timetable for ministerial change becomes clear.

The finance minister said staying put in the finance portfolio is not an option, as her involvement would undermine the new position.

On the ministerial docket, Urpilainen did not want to speculate whether Rinne should become the next finance minister.

Urpilainen also pointed out that she will not disappear from the SDP and the political arena but did not seem to have evaluated her interest on international assignments.

Urpilainen also expressed her disappointment at the narrow defeat comparing it to the famous loss suffered by Finnish cross-country skier Juha Mieto. She said, “Now I understand better how Juha Mieto felt in Lake Placid.”
