Riihimäki Prison plans improving its security arrangements after Thursday’s incident which led to the death of an inmate.

Tommi Saarinen, deputy director of the prison facility admitted that the incident has prompted the need for careful evaluation and changes in the manner in which the prison operations are handled.

A 50-year-old male prisoner was killed on Thursday after violence broke out at the prison. Four men aged 30 to 40 are held in suspicion of their involvement in the crime.

According to Saarinen, a comparatively more hands-on procedure is currently being used to monitor inmates in the facility. The equipments used in the prison and the regular course of the work also have to be re-evaluated.

Saarinen confirmed that the murder took place in a kitchen used for a rehabilitative programme.

He said, “The room is used for prisoners’ own cooking and it is now out of bounds due to the investigation. Otherwise, the prison is running normally and peacefully.”

The prison safety in the country is generally good, according to Esa Vesterbacka, director-general of the Criminal Sanctions Agency. Vesterbacka considers Thursday’s killing as an isolated incident and rare.

According to Vesterbacka, the last such incident took place 10 years ago.

Back in 2005 in Kylmäkoski, one prisoner stabbed a cellmate in the neck. Previous to the Kylmäkoski incident, one inmate died in Hämeenlinna Prison in 2001 following an assault.

Violence of less severity however does take place in prisons more often. The prisons medical staff detect about 50 to 60 cases annually. Following up these incidents, according to Vesterbacka, is difficult as prisoners tend to conceal these altercations.

Justice Minister Anna-Maija Henriksson, meanwhile, has called on the Criminal Sanctions Agency to investigate the Riihimäki Prison incident. The minister said it is important to find out how security in prisons can be improved.
