FTimes-STT Report, July 17

A number of Salmon fishes died in the river Tornio, sources at the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY centre) in Lapland said.

Sources said that dozens of Salmons were found dead and floating in the river in between Kolari and Tornio.

Kare Koivisto, a fishery expert from Lapland ELY Centre said the dead fish had also been discovered in the Swedish side.

The first dead fish were found a few week ago.

The reason behind the death of fishes is yet to be ascertained but the Lapland ELY Centre in its preliminary assessment said that high temperature of the water might have caused it.

Warm water could cause some fish to die due to lack of oxygen, said the ELY centre expert.

"Water temperature is a significant factor especially for salmons," said Koivisto.

A sample of the dead fishes was sent to the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira for examination.
