The second consignment of wastage of Syrian chemical weapons arrived in Finland on Sunday for destruction.

The chemicals will be incinerated at Ekokem Oy’s waste management plant in Riihimäki.

A total of 12 tons of hexamine and butanol was delivered to the country this time round.

Ekokem was selected as one of the processors of the waste generated in the destruction of chemical weapon programme in Syria.

The chemicals will be incinerated in high-temperature furnace of over 1,000°C. The incineration heat will be converted to electricity and district heat.

The first consignment of the wastage of Syrian chemical weapons arrived for destruction on June 21. A Norwegian vessel, Taiko, brought the shipment of 30 containers.

Earlier, Ekokem decided to participate in the programme for dismantling Syrian chemical weapons as part of the activities of the United Nations and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) under an agreement with the OPCW.

The destruction programme is being conducted on a commercial basis in accordance with each participating country’s legislation, safety and environmental standards.

Finland strongly supports the OPCW-UN mission. Finland has, among other things, granted 650,000 euros to OPCW’s two Syria funds. In addition, a Finnish protection troop is participating in the sea transport operation being carried out by Denmark and Norway.
