President Sauli Niinistö on Saturday said the people living in Gaza are in a vulnerable situation and hoped for an immediate ceasefire there through fruitful negotiations.

Speaking at a programme in the southwest city of Pori, the president also expressed his wonder at not being informed about the confiscated arms consignment bound for Ukraine before the report hit news media.

Niinistö said the people of Gaza are going through a situation more dangerous than the people of Israel following the rocket attacks.

He termed the lives of the innocent people in Gaza vulnerable and wished for a ceasefire in the area as soon as possible.

The president also mentioned that he was not informed about the confiscation of the Ukraine-bound arms consignment at the Helsinki airport in June.

He said he came to know about the incident after the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat had run a report in this regard on Friday.

Niinistö said he was surprised that the customs authorities seized the arms cargo at the end of June but the president was not informed about it.

According to the report, the consignment comprised components of a missile guidance system. Customs officials came across the find during a routine check.

The matter, according to the report, was not made public due to the sensitivity of Ukraine crisis and was revealed only to senior figures in the government.

The country from which the consignment was sent from remains unnamed and the recipient is yet to be confirmed.

Speaking on the shooting down of a passenger plane in Ukraine, the president said effective dialogue between the West and Russia on the existing geopolitical crisis in the region is a must, reported Yle.

Niinistö said the situation in Ukraine has gone from bad to worse after the Malaysian Airlines passenger plane flight MH-17 was downed over Ukraine, the Yle report added.
