The Helsinki District Court on Wednesday granted the prosecution more time in the case faced by Jari Aarnio, the former head of Helsinki Drug Unit police.

The new deadline set by the court now extends to October 22.

At the same time, it emerged that Aarnio is now suspected of distorting evidence, a crime which he was charged with on Wednesday.

The lead prosecutor Jukka Haavisto, however, remained tight lipped on the new charge faced by Aarnio.

The charge is related to the whole case but Haavisto did not divulge on the finer details. According to Haavisto, the new suspicion is about an attempt to frame someone wrongly as guilty for committing a crime.

Aarnio's lawyer Riitta Leppiniemi did not comment on the new charge other than confirming that Aarnio denies the allegation.

The former chief of the Helsinki police drug unit has been in custody since November 2013 on various charges including bribery, money laundering and abuse of position.

The new allegation is suspected to have taken place between February 2012 and spring of 2013. Aarnio denies all the charges and continue to maintain his innocence.
