Christian aid organisation International Assistance Mission (IAM) on Sunday decided to suspend its operation at Herat in Afghansitan, confirmed  Heini Mäkilä, the acting executive director of the organization.

The suspension follows the killing of two Finnish female aid workers in the western Afghan town of Herat by unknown gunmen on July 24.

The victims worked for the Christian aid organisation IAM which completely closed its project in Herat until the situation is reassessed, according to Mäkilä.

The organisation's crisis working group on Sunday discussed the security situation and decided to suspend its operation in Herat.

Furthermore, the organisation has decided against sending foreign workers to Herat in the next few months.

According to Mäkilä, the IAM will decide on long term measures after more information on safety of employees is gathered. Mäkilä hopes that the organisation can continue with its work in the future.

Meanwhile, programmes are being held at different Churches in the country commemorating the slain aid workers.

The victims were remembered at Jyväskylä and Korpilahti churches on Saturday where the people observed one minutes silence to commemorate the victims.
Special prayers were also offered in Seinäjoki churches on Sunday.
