The spouse of the male nurse suspected of poisoning an elderly man in Salo has admitted to police that she obtained fake academic qualification and employment certificates.

With the help of the acquired fake documents, the woman managed to continue with nursing studies in the country.

According to Valvira, the woman completed a course in nursing in spring of 2012 at Turku University of Applied Sciences.

Currently, Valvira is investigating the authenticity of the male nurse’s academic qualifications. Police suspect that the male nurse may have as well presented fake academic and employment certificates to an education institution.

Diakonia University of Applied Sciences (Diak), where the man was enrolled in 2009-2011, was asked to investigate the man's credentials.

Jorma Niemelä, rector of Diak, said the institution has checked the authenticity of the man's qualifications as far as it could.

The man has claimed to have studied abroad as a nurse and on that basis had sought further qualifications in the country.

The 54-year-old man is suspected to have poisoned an 84-year-old woman in an attempt to conceal property related crimes.

According to the police, he had tried to poison the elderly woman in the past using the same substance. The elderly woman then was hospitalised, but no suspicion of using poison was raised.

Salo police has asked for help from foreign officials in determining the man's educational background.
