The President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Thursday decided that Finland will continue to participate in military crisis management in Afghanistan,  said an official press release.

The committee at a meeting discussed the situation in Afghanistan and mulled over Finland's overall support including development cooperation, humanitarian aid and development of economic relations, as well as continued participation in military crisis management.

After the ISAF operation, Finland is preparing to participate in NATO's Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan with approximately 80 soldiers.

The operation will start at the beginning of 2015. The main part of the Finnish troops will be located in Mazar-e-Shafir in northern Afghanistan.

The aim of the mission is to provide training, advice and support to the Afghan security forces.

The committee also discussed the situation in Ukraine, especially in the light of the elections held in the separatist areas of eastern Ukraine on 2 November.

Finland, like other EU countries, considers the elections illegal and does not recognise them as they were not organised in accordance with the Ukrainian law and the Minsk ceasefire protocol.

The Committee received a report by a working group assessing the need for legislative amendments related to crisis management and other international cooperation.

The report, published on 4 November, provides a comprehensive overview of the needs for legislative amendments related to crisis management and to the granting of and requests for international assistance, the press release added.
