Use of social media platforms by underage people reveals a worrying trend, said the Päijät-Häme police.

Many upper comprehensive school students have complete public profiles on social media sites and have many friends whom they have never met.

According to a research conducted by the Päijät-Häme police, one in every 10 youths has posted pictures of themselves which they would not want their parents to see.

Every one in five girls revealed that they had their pictures or photos posted without their consent.

Youngsters are also reported to use adult sites such as Hot or Not or Tinder. During the survey, the young people listed as much as 74 social media sites or apps which they use.

The police conducted the research in autumn 2013 and spring 2014. More than 2,700 school children in grades 6-9 in Päijät-Häme were interviewed during the survey.
