Evangelical Lutheran Church Archbishop Kari Mäkinen said it is time to have a valuable discussion on marriage.

The discussion ought to be held in a number of forums and in other discourses outside the precincts of church governance, said the archbishop.

There is no need to fear, since possible changes in the church will only happen if the issue has reached a wide consensus.

About 13,000 people have resigned from the church following the parliament’s approval of the equal marriage bill.

Some of those who had resigned informed via eroakirkosta.fi website that they had resigned from the church because of Mäkinen’s position on the issue as posted on Facebook.

Some termed Mäkinen’s position too supportive of homosexuality and against the church’s position.

Mäkinen told the news agency STT that same-sex marriage rights is an issue which touches feelings deeply and that is why reactions have been strong. However, Mäkinen said the issue had been subject to proper and balanced discussion.
