A young boy was killed on Wednesday in a skiing accident in Ylläs, Kolari.

The accident happened in the afternoon in the skiing areas of Ylläsjärvi.

The police said the victim was an 11-year-old boy from southern Finland.

It is suspected that the accident was a result of skiing derailment after which the victim is believed to have hit an adjacent fence.

The police have ruled out criminal suspicion of involvement of other parties. They are investigating the cause of the death.

Ylläs-Ski-resort Director Tuomo Poukkanen told news agency STT that weather conditions in areas of Ylläs on Wednesday had been good.

According to the resort, the accident did not happen on their slopes.

Poukkanen said he could not recall of a fatal incident resulting from a skiing accident during his career since the end of 1980s.

A number of injuries happen every year at ski resorts, but fatal accidents are very rare.

According to statistics published by the Finnish Ski Area Association, approximately 1,900 accidents took place in the 2013-2014 season.

Over 60 per cent of the accidents happened during descents while over 90 per cent of them, according to the association, were individual accidents.
