Icebreakers crew strike kicked off on Thursday after negotiations between the sailors' union and the Finnish Engineers' Association- SKL with the National Conciliator collapsed.

The strike began with Arctia Shipping icebreakers on Thursday afternoon after failure to agree on the terms of agreement.

The strike effectively started at 2:00 pm, but some of the parties had already called on the strike despite Thursday's ongoing negotiations.
The parties had tried to strike a deal on Wednesday with negotiations lasting until late in the evening.

Before the announcement of the strike, two other parties involved in the negotiations, an employer representative union and the Finnish Ships' Officers' Association-SLPL were ready to accept the terms on the table.

Ice breaking company Arctia Shipping is a Finnish state-owned specialised shipping company. It offers icebreaking services, multipurpose vessels specialised services as well as engaged in oil spill response and port icebreaking.

The sailors' union, the Finnish Ships' Officers' Association-SLPL and Finnish Engineers' Association- SKL on Wednesday issued a double strike threat.

The dispute on the table is related to oil spill prevention work as well as the general work force involved in the operations, revealed Simo Zitting, chair of the sailors' union.
