The National Bureau of Investigation will have its own cyber crime prevention centre, said the National Police Board.

The centre is geared towards improvement of police capacity to prevent serious crimes and investigate.

The centre is to begin operations on April 1.

In addition to prevention of cyber crimes, the new centre will be involved in internet intelligence as well as conducting threat assessments.

The police have also stepped up their fight against crimes by establishing 15 regional special response task forces. The special groups will be equipped to conduct operations on land, inland waters as well as in dark and cold conditions.

The police special unit “Karhu-ryhmä” (Bear Group) is responsible for the nationwide rapid response operations.

The parliament allocated the regional groups 2.7 million euros in appropriations.

“Based on the European scale, the Finnish police operational activities and preparation are top level. The police have been using a number of technical and tactical applications which are just starting to be developed in other countries,” said Police Superintendent Jussi Huhtela in a statement.
