FTimes-STT Report, Mar 17

A 58-year-old man charged with strangling his wife to death in last June at Vuosaari district was on Monday sentenced to nine years in prison by the District Court of Helsinki.

The court said the course of the event could not be fully established, however, the motive which led to the act was because the woman wanted to break up with the accused.

According to the court, the woman had earlier expressed her intention, and even before the incident, the couple had spoken about the matter in the bedroom.

The victim's three children were at home during the strangling. Two of the children were behind the door of the bedroom, and one of them tried to force way through the door to intervene.

In the end, one child called the emergency response centre. The police found the body of the victim in the bedroom when they arrived.

The man was reportedly drunk during the act, but psychiatric examination carried out after the incident found that the man was responsible for his actions.
