The government has taken an initiative to woo the new 75,000 voters to the upcoming parliamentary polls scheduled for April 19.

The Ministry of Justice has decided to send letters to persons who have acquired Finnish citizenship and Finnish youths who, for the first time, have become eligible to vote in parliamentary elections, said an official press release on Tuesday.

The letters will be sent to around 21000 people who got citizenship during the last four years after the previous parliamentary polls and 54000 young voters who now have the right to vote for the first time.

Every Finnish citizen, who has reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election is entitled to vote and the Population Register Centre sends a polling card containing information about the polling centre to each eligible voter.

Meanwhile, advance voting will be held from April 8 to April 14 in Finland and April 8 to April 11 abroad.

Voters must present proof of their identity both when voting on the elections day and when voting in advance. The identification must have a photo on it.

Persons whose ability to move is so restricted that they are unable to come to an advance polling station or a polling station on election day without undue hardship may vote in advance at home.

Those who wish to vote in advance at home must notify the central electoral committee in their municipality of their intention by April 7.

The family carer of a person entitled to vote at home, living in the same household, may under certain conditions also vote at home.

The national elections will be held across the country from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm on April 19 to elect 200 parliament members for the next four years.

For the parliamentary elections, the country has been divided into 13 electoral districts.
