FTimes – STT Report, May 8

The National Bureau of Investigation has read and transcribed confidential messages between narcotics police officers in Kuopio, reported the Finnish language daily Savon Sanomat.

An NBI team was sent to investigate the cell phones and computers of the police officers in Kuopio on suspicion of crimes being committed.

According to the Savon Sanomat, the team read and copied messages and information that were not part of the official NBI investigation.

Some of the photocopied messages were sent to the Savon Sanomat.

“The police were assured that they would be informed which of their messages were copied [...] Upon inspection of those messages, the squad leader of the narcotics officers said that messages between me and him were copied,” says reporter Asta Tenhunen in a comment.

The Savon Sanomat points out that the criteria of an NBI investigation are not public, so legal experts are unable to say whether the NBI’s actions are legal or not.
