A total of 10 persons drowned in April this year, according to the preliminary data gathered by the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation.

Among them eight were men, one was woman and the last a three-year-old boy.

In all, 25 people have been confirmed dead as a result of drowning since the start of the year.

According to the association, the statistics reflect the exceptional winter conditions.

The number of people who have drowned in the beginning of the year has been much higher than previous year’s average. Cases of near misses have also become frequent.

Kristiina Heinonen, the executive director of the association, called for the improvement of attitudes.

“Worryingly, many ignore, for instance the authorities’ warning of weak ice,” Heinonen said.

The association will launch the traditional “Safe waters” campaign on Saturday in Sipoo.
