Sun, 07 Jun, 2015 12:00:19 AM FTimes-STT Report, June 7  Carl Haglund. Photo Lehtikuva. The chairman of the Suomen Ruotsalainen Kansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland), Carl Haglund on Saturday strongly criticized the government’s new savings plan.
The size of the savings, however, he says, is the right one.
Speaking at the party congress in Pedersöre, he said it is strange that Juha Sipilä’s government wants to make cuts to education, though, as stated in the government programme, education and skills are the Finnish trump cards.
“The Sipilä government is sending the bills for these savings to our children. At the same time, higher education, research and development are also receiving these bills,” said the immediate past former defence minister.
The Swedish People’s Party will present their own alternative budgets in September, whose cuts to training, education and research are, according to the party, more reasonable.
The party points out that even during the 90s recession, the government supported the development of skills. Haglung characterizes Sipilä’s current plan for savings as a catastrophe for education and research.
Haglund also took a position on immigration and the Finnish government’s intentions to clarify the costs of immigrants.
“It remains a mystery, how we manage to attract anyone to move to this country, when Sipilä and friends are standing at the border, and gluing price tags on their foreheads.”
Haglund noted that previous studies have shown that an aging Finland needs to attract more people. He also pointed out that he himself would shy away from moving to a country where “after crossing the border, you first hear about how much you’re going to pay”.
“This is leading to the True Finn’s simplified policy, now that they have reached power with the help of Keskusta and Kokoomus.”
