Bicycle thefts have increased drastically in the last few years, reported Savon Sanomat, a Finnish language newspaper.

Insurance companies confirmed to the newspaper that nearly 17,200 bicycles were stolen in 2014.

In 2012, it was reported that around 12,000 bicycles were stolen, and in the year before bicycle thefts reported was less than 10,000.

Aku Pänkäläinen, a Safety Adviser at Federation of Finnish Financial Services told the paper there is no specific reason for the increase in bicycle thefts.

Cycling is more popular than ever and consequently the demand has risen.

“A bicycle is an easy target and furthermore the thief gets a good price for the bicycle,” Pänkäläinen said.

Pänkäläinen explained that bicycles are stolen by, for instance, drug abusers. There is little evidence obtained on organised activity regarding bicycle thefts.

Pänkäläinen advised bicycle owners to write down the specific details of the bicycle as well as use frame and arch locks.
