Former minister and long-time foreign policy expert Jaakko Iloniemi has urged the country's foreign policy leadership to take more active role in handling Finland's international relations.

Iloniemi criticised the President as well as the government for largely focusing on domestic policy.

Iloniemi during the launching of his book described the uncertainty of the world politics and the changed security situation in the Baltic Sea.

“We have to monitor the situation and adapt because the situation changes in very fast intervals and often in a very unpredictable way,” Iloniemi told news agency STT at the book launching ceremony.
For this reason, the country should not prune the network of its missions abroad but instead expand it, he pointed out.

In his view, foreign policy leadership calls for great vigilance and preparedness. The political leadership, according to Iloniemi, should divide attention so as to also learn deeply about profound changes.

“The world has not stopped to wait because the Finns are getting their economy back in order. It is rushing forward in an unpredictable way,” he said.

According to Iloniemi, the country too has been obliged to reevaluate its assessment of the Baltic Sea security situation. Closer defence policy cooperation with Sweden and NATO explains the need to increase operational preparedness.
