The Council for Mass Media (Julkisen sanan neuvosto, or JSN) has chosen Elina Grundström, a woman for the first time, as its new chairman.

She will assume her duties from the beginning of next year. At the same time, the work is changing to full-time.

Grundström previously served as chief editor of the Green Wire and Ylioppilaslehti (Higher Education Magazine), as well as being a visiting journalism professor at the University of Tampere.

She has published several nonfiction books.

The current chairman Risto Uimonen was re-elected in 2010 as a part-time chairman for three years.

Uimonen's second and final term expires at the end of this year. In the future, a term will be four years long.

The body of the Council for Mass Media is made up of publishers and journalists, and is responsible for, among other things, interpreting good journalistic practice and to defend freedoms of expression and publication.

The selection was made by the JSN's support association. The jury consisted of chairman Arto Nieminen, Jukka Holmberg of Sanomalehti Liitto, Mikko Hoikka of Aikakausmedia and Atte Jääskeläinen of Yleisradio.
