FTimes – STT Report, Nov 18

The police are going to get additional mobile breathalysers transported to police stations in order to lower the number of suspected drunk drivers, reports the Keskisuomalainen.

At a checkpoint, police test motorists’ alcohol levels using a breathalyser, the result of which is legally binding. Punishment may only be imposed on the basis of the results of the test.

In sparsely populated areas, police are sometimes required to transport suspected drunk drivers up to a couple of hundred kilometres to the nearest police station for testing.

Inspector Heikki Ihalainen of the Police Board said in the future, police will be able to use the time saved for other services.

The aim is to acquire over the next few years a hundred new precision breathalysers, which costs about one million euros.
