A top-ranking police official in Eastern Finland has been accused of violating the traffic law.

The official, Jarmo Nykänen, the deputy chief of  the Eastern Finland police was transferred to another department for an indefinite period on charge of violating the speed limit of the road, reported the Finnish language daily Savon Sanomat.

Eastern Finland chief of police Taisto Huokko said Nykänen was transferred to another department for the period of the pre-trial investigation and prosecution, because he is suspected of a felony traffic offence on highway 5 in Juva last December.

Nykänen previously led the police permit services for the whole Eastern Finland region, where they, among other things, deal with driving bans.

“His job description was temporarily changed, because the investigating officer on the Nykänen case has reason to suspect a serious traffic offence and not a less-serious crime,” Huokko said, hopping that the matter will be swiftly dealt with by the prosecution.

Nykänen is suspected of driving 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
