The Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) member of European Parliament, Paavo Väyrynen will form his own political party, Kansalaispuolue (Citizen's Party).

Väyrynen wrote in his blog about the decision of forming the new party and plans to be a candidate for the parliamentary elections of 2019.

“The idea is that members of the party would only be MPs and MEPs who all belong to the party's board,” Väyrynen wrote.

According to him, Kansalaispuolue will form a support group, which may include non-members and Finns of different political affiliation, who are in favor of the party's goals.

He said that Kansalaispuolue will try to push Finland's goals and influence the general election.

Väyrynen also welcomes discussion on his blog for the party and its supporters.

“I call upon those supporters involved in Keskusta operations to continue their work in the party and to influence its political goals. I hope that the party will return to its roots and prosper,” he said.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, also the Chair of Keskusta said he is disappointed but not very surprised at Väyrynen's decision to form a new party.

According to Sipilä, the decision would not affect Keskusta operations.

The PM said he is sorry for those in Keskusta who have worked for decades on Väyrynen's behalf.
