The Minister of Agriculture and the Environment, Kimmo Tiilikainen believes that the protection of the endangered freshwater Saimaa ringed seal can be ensured with the cooperation of local bodies.

He encourages the owners of fishing areas to end their contracts in favour of larger restricted areas.

The previous restriction agreements came to an end at the turn of the year. Instead of the previous 2000 square kilometers, the aim is to extend the ban on net fishing to 2,600 square kilometers.

The ban on using fishing nets in order to protect the Saimaa ringed seals remains in place from mid-April until the end of June. During this period, however, vendace nets can be used to fish the ringed seals.

The minister believes that previous fishing restriction period has proved effective.

“The ringed seal population has increased. The protection of the ringed seal is enhanced because the agreement is offered to a much expansive area,” said Tiilikainen.

The environmental organisation WWF wants the ban to apply also in July.
