The number of women hunters is growing rapidly in the country.

According to Suomen Riista Keskus (Finnish Game Centre), about 25 per cent of the new hunting licences have been granted to women.

Each year, about 7,000 licences are issued.

Hunting is traditionally a male-dominated hobby. Finland currently has a total of about 308,000 licensed hunters, about seven to eight per cent of which are women.

An annual game management fee is required for the hunting licence. Getting the card also requires a hunter’s diploma.

According to the Finnish Hunters’ Association, about half of those who pay the game management fee actively hunt.

“Women are attracted to hunting due to the closeness of nature, game animals, and hunting with their dogs. The same reasons also attract men to the hobby,” said the executive director of the association, Panu Hiidenmies.

Women start hunting at an age older than men, who often get their hunting licences as teenagers.
