Racist, violent activities punishable
FTimes - STT Report, Sep 21

Minister of Labour and Justice Jari Lindström has pointed out that the law already permits intervention in violent and racist activity.

Lindström believes due to the events that took place at the Helsinki Central Railway Station Square, the law should be quickly revised, whether it could be more specific in some parts, especially if its interpretations are unclear.

Lindström strongly condemned violent and racist activity.

“The right to gather and move is guaranteed in Finland, but racist, threatening or violent activities are already punishable actions. Constitution secures the freedom of speech but racist expressions do not earn such protection,” Lindström said in a statement.

According to Lindström an organisation operating clearly against the law or good manners, such as an openly racist organisation, can be legally ordered to be abolished -- whether or not the organisation has been registered.

Lindström said as the minister of justice he cannot talk about the status of individual organisations, their activities or their evaluation. Investigation of these crimes -- as all other -- in Finland belongs to the police, and the final evaluation is done by the judiciary.
