Security Police (Supo) Head Antti Pelttari said although the extremist organisations focused solely on the refugee issue have pumped up their activities, they do not constitute a threat to the national security.

Nonetheless, Supo is very keen in monitoring the situation, reported the Finnish language newspaper Verkkouutiset.

“The threat to public order and safety has increased, leading to local violence, but we do not view these organisations as a threat to the national security,” said Pelttari.

Supo has, however, changed its assessment of the radicalized atmosphere and animal rights movements.

Last year, it was estimated that the movement had not carried out any significant illegal activity.

In the spring, demonstrators against the construction of Pyhäjoki nuclear power plant set a police car on fire.

In June, an arson attack was made on a bus depot in Vantaa, in which an activist group was involved.
