The Finnish aircraft that took pictures of Thursday’s ‘suspected’ violations of the Finnish airspace by two Russian fighters were in the air at the time of the violations.

Saku Joukas, a lecturer on air warfare at the National Defence University of Finland, said the planes could not have reached the site from the ground from any base.

According to the Border Guard, the suspected violations lasted for about a minute.

In the first incident, a Russian SU-27 fighter was detected on the Gulf of Finland south of Porvoo at about 4.43 p.m.

The suspected violation of Finnish airspace continued for approximately one minute and flew in Finnish airspace for about 13 kilometres at a maximum of about one kilometre depth.

The second suspected violation took place at about 9.33 p.m. late Thursday night by another Russian SU-27 fighter in the same sky area.

The fact that there were Finnish planes in the sky is nothing exceptional, according to Joukas. Such on-call action in the airspace is one form of maintaining readiness, which is usually done for hours or at most once for days.
