Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Saturday said it is problematic if the transparency of the holdings of shareholders is reduced to implement the proposed shareholders’ registry.

The PM made the remarks while replying to a query regarding the transparency issue during MTV’s Uutisextra (Extra News) programme.

“Of course [it’s problematic]. Our starting point is that transparency does not decrease,” Sipilä finally answered.

Sipilä has previously mentioned that he holds it as the basis of the registry that transparency will not decrease.

Foreign Minister Timo Soini said on Thursday that the government had decided not to bring the shareholder registry forward until all the bottlenecks and unclear steps have been cleared.

The Ministry of Finance advocated the proposal that would allow Finnish shareholders to hide their assets abroad.

Under the current system, securities information on Finnish shareholders is public.

The shareholders’ registry has been criticised by the police, the Tax Administration, journalist associations and others.
