The first phase of the transport reforms proposed by the government would generate about 5,700 jobs by the year 2020.

Of these, almost 2,000 jobs would be in the taxi business and over 2,000 would be in the transportation of goods.

The assessment of the impact of the second phase of the transport reforms will come later as the preparation progresses, said Ministry of Transport and Communications Director-General Olli-Pekka Rantala.

“The second stage is expected, for example, to create developments in all fields, so there certainly would be an impact on employment,” said Rantala.

The government reached an agreement earlier this week on the first phase of the reforms in the transport sector and adopted a draft on Thursday.

Taxi operations will continue to be licensed, but the number of taxis and price regulation will be abandoned.

There are still two phases left in the reforms.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said in early September that the 20,000 new jobs will depend on the courage of the project. Also, Finance Minister Petteri Orpo has estimated that the reforms could bring a total of 20,000 new jobs.

The government proposal also estimated that 15,000 people more would be employed for inland transport services in 2020 than were in last year. The estimate for the first arc of the reforms, therefore, is estimated to create 5,700 jobs.
