Prime Minister Alexander Stubb on Tuesday made a phone call to the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, and discussed various issues including the political situation of the country.

During the call initiated by the Finnish premier, both the leaders concluded that the July 17 shooting down of Malaysian passenger plane marked a turning point in the Ukrainian crisis, said a government press release.

“It is imperative to seek a negotiated solution to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.  President Poroshenko and I agreed that Russia must bear its responsibility to promote a rapid de-escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine,” said Stubb, adding that Finland will continue to influence efforts to advance the resolution of the crisis both on the EU level and through bilateral discussions.

Over the past days, Prime Minister Stubb has discussed the situation in Ukraine also with the German federal chancellor, Dutch prime minister, Estonian prime minister, Swedish prime minister, Swedish foreign minister and Dutch foreign minister.

Stubb intends to continue with bilateral discussions in the following days, too.
